Reflecting on a talk by Nick R
Have you ever thought of the difference between happiness and joy? The bible lists joy as one of the fruits of the spirit, rather than happiness. When we talk about what brings us happiness, it tends to be things that are temporary, things that come and go throughout our days or lives. Joy on the other hand, is something that does not waiver. With God in my life, I feel as though I can find joy in all things.
There is a verse in Habakkuk that has long been one of my favourites, and one I often think of when things around me don’t seem to be going as planned.
Habakkuk 3:17-19
17 Though the fig tree doesn’t bloom, and there’s no produce on the vine; though the olive crop withers, and the fields don’t provide food; though the sheep are cut off from the pen, and there are no cattle in the stalls;
18 I will rejoice in the Lord. I will rejoice in the God of my deliverance.
19 The Lord God is my strength.
There is another in Philippians that gets straight to the point, reminding us that God is always there as a friend and confidant and we are to speak to him in good times and bad;
Philippians 4:6-7
6 Don’t be anxious about anything; rather, bring up all of your requests to God in your prayers and petitions, along with giving thanks.
7 Then the peace of God that exceeds all understanding will keep your hearts and minds safe in Christ Jesus.
In these times where the new norm is being isolated from friends and family, I take comfort that God is there for me no matter what, and I hope you do too.
